The Betsy Ross 3¢ stamp with U.S. Flag
Jun 1st, 2007 by Deborah Hendrick
This stamp was issued in 1952 to commemorate the 200th birthday of Betsy Ross. Unless more documentation is found, the debate about who constructed the “first” flag will continue.
Was it Betsy Ross? Francis Hopkinson? Mr. Hopkinson has official federal records on his side, and Ms. Ross has more than 200 years of anecdotal history on hers.
The engraving for this stamp came from the 1892 painting by Charles Weisgerber titled “Birth of Our Nation’s Flag.” Restored in 2000, today the painting is on display at the Pennsylvania state capitol in Harrisburg.

What is a full sheet of the Betsy Ross Stamp worth
Hi Mr. Hayes.
Hard for me to say what the stamps might be worth. I have the 33rd edition of The Postal Service Guide to U.S. Stamps (2006), and it shows that an unused stamp in mint condition is worth 20c. I did a quick Google search and found a block plate of four stamps for sale for $1.50.
I don’t collect stamps myself, but started writing about flags on stamps because it was interesting to me. However, I must admit, the urge to collect these stamps—ones with the U.S. flag on them, or state flags—is growing.
Thank you for writing,
Deborah Hendrick
