Since the last star added was over fifty years ago (1960), I thought I would do a quick review.

Section 2 of the U.S. Flag Code says:

On the admission of a new State into the Union one star shall be
added to the union of the flag; and such addition shall take effect on the fourth day of July then next succeeding such admission.

President Eisenhower signed the Act of Admission in March 1959, and Hawaii was officially admitted by Congress as the 50th state in August 1959, and the “official” new star was added to the flag on the 4th of July, 1960.
